The movie The Imitation Game caught my attention from the very beginning. I first developed interest in the movie because of the actor, Benedict Cumberbatch, is one of my favorite actors. The movie is based on a true story and takes place in Europe during World War Two and the British army is trying to break the communication system of Nazi Germany referred to as “Enigma.” A math professor by the name of Alan Turing is hired by the government along with some others to try and break the system. The movie goes through the struggles and challenges that Alan had to face as a child and also what he is facing now. At first they try to crack the system by using their heads but Alan finds that they need more in order to figure the system out. Alan ends up creating a machine that helps them break into the system and win the war but sacrifices had to be made. While the story is being told you find out that after the war Alan gets in trouble by the law for something he was trying to keep a secret. This movie not only describes how World War Two was secretly won but it also discusses the challenges that homosexuals had to go through during this time. He also inspired the invention of the computer that is used so often today.
I really liked this movie because I felt that you really got to know the main character and the struggles that the main character had to go through. I also thought this movie helped explain how determination can help you achieve what is believed to be impossible. The Enigma is thought to be impossible to break but through Alan Turing’s determination and willingness to sacrifice himself for the greater good it helped him achieve the unimaginable. The only bias that I probably could have had is that I am a fan of historical movies especially ones about World War Two which could have caused me to like the movie.
